Gamegeek Exclusive: The first politician to own esports teams!

There’s a new team owner in town, and he is a Member of House of Representatives!

Esports has indeed come a long way from its humble beginnings. But to have the government’s support has always seemed far from reach — until now. Early this year, the Philippines became one of the first countries to formally recognize professional esports players as legitimate athletes. Now, the country once again took things up a notch, by being the first country to ever form a team that is actually sponsored by a government official, particularly a Member of House of Representatives.

INTRODUCING TEAM ALBEE, THE FIRST EVER ESPORTS TEAM (NOT JUST IN THE PHILIPPINES, BUT IN THE WORLD) TO BE BACKED BY A POLITICIAN!

Meet the first active official to ever own esports teams!

Albee Benitez, Representative of the 3rd District of Negros Occidental, has always been a visionary. He is one of the nation’s finest, who first ran for office back in 2010. Honorable Benitez has quickly risen through the ranks since then. Perhaps one of his greatest achievements is turning his hometown’s schools into advanced technological hubs. This in effect increased their students’ passing rates and chances for higher education.

Congressman Benitez has even managed to provide solar power in rural areas, thereby earning the love and respect of his constituents. He is the type of guy who sees the potential in all things, and strives to make things better. Honorable Benitez is certainly a crowd favorite, with more citizens hopeful he will run for the Senate in their next election. The new era is certainly upon us. Looking at his track record, we certainly could not have asked for a better crusader!

By sponsoring a local team, he aims to be an advocate for responsible gaming.

The esports industry still has a lot of room to grow. With this type of support, the Philippines has certainly taken a step further into realizing its true place in competitive gaming. Unlike other teams who exist only to rack up as many tournament winnings as they can, Team Albee’s main focus is to promote esports as a healthy outlet for the dedicated and skillful Filipino youth. He is planning on breeding and developing homegrown talents, and no doubt the Philippines has many, to give them better opportunities in life. With this move, more Filipino gamers will be encouraged to work harder because now they have a champion from the government who will finally give them a voice.

At present, Benitez has already formed teams for Dota 2, LOL, CS:GO, and Crossfire. Announcement for the players of Team Albee will be happening soon.

Honorable Benitez draws inspiration from prominent esports franchises such as TNC and Execration. So many Filipino gamers have stood up to bring the country pride on foreign soil. The best part? Games and Amusement Board will also offer them full support, the same way it advocated for other PH pros.

So many changes are now shaping up the esports and gaming industry to what it should be.

When even a Government official sees our potential, there is truly an infinite number of possibilities. What a time to be a gamer in the Philippines!
