Rep. Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District) fell into murky water when a National Housing Authority funded wooden footbridge leading to houses on stilts collapsed in Barangay Rio Hondo in Zamboanga City yesterday.
Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez was among the officials who fell into murky water in Barangay Rio Hondo in Zamboanga City as shown in this photo posted on his Facebook wall*
Benitez, chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, told the DAILY STAR he sustained a few scratches and bruises.
The fall into what appeared to be filthy water was captured on video was shown on national television and went viral on social media yesterday.
Also with Benitez during the fall were Rep. Celso Lobregat (Zamboanga, 1 st District), Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco and several others who also sustained minor injuries.
Benitez, who was in Zamboaga for a site inspection of housing projects intended for the victims of the Zamboanga siege, said they were thankful no one was seriously injured when the bridge collapsed, it was a good thing there were no children when the incident happened.
The upside of the incident is that it raised awareness about the serious housing problem in Barangay Rio Hondo, and the dangers residents face because of substandard work, he said.
As a long term solution to the collapsed bridge, we will ask for the full cooperation of the National Housing Authority to build a concrete bridge in Rio Hondo so that a repeat of the incident yesterday will not happen again, he said.
“The lack of maintenance in building bridges and houses is very dangerous for the residents, especially for the children," he added.
Benitez also hit the use of substandard materials for the housing projects and community facilities for the Zamboanga siege victims.
“The very purpose of housing our displaced fellowmen is ensuring their security. Why are we putting them at risk again by building houses of poor quality?” Benitez said.
Benitez' panel has conducted a congressional probe on the issue of substandard houses hounding resettlement efforts, particularly for the victims of the super typhoon Yolanda.*CPG/PNA
