More gains at Bicam -Zubiri; Benitez files price probe bid

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said further gains were reached yesterdayfor the sugar industry during the bicameral conference committee's revision of the excise tax on sugar sweetened beverages (SSB).

“It is a great victory for the industry,” he said in a text message.

The bicameral committee,aside from agreeing on PHP6 per liter excise tax forSSBs using sugar, and PHP12 per liter for High Fructose Corn Syrup, also agreed that there will be no more further tax increase for several years, he said.

A congressional inquiry is expected to commence soon on complaints of sugar farmers versus the unabated entry or smuggling of imported alternative sweeteners that are driving down prices of locally produced sugar.

Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District), who authored the Sugarcane Industry Development Act, yesterday said that he will file a resolution in the House of Representatives, calling for a congressional probe into the matter on Monday.

Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) is the invited guest speaker today at the 39th Real Estate Brokers Association of the Philippines Inc. national convention, that is ongoing at L’Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City, REBAP president Rhoneil Mercado said.

He added they invited the solon as he is the chairman of the House Committee on Housing, a press release said.

Mercado said that the opening of the convention yesterday was very successful, and more than 500 licensed brokers from all over the country registered for the event.

Silay City Government and Habitat for Humanity Philippines Foundation, Inc. signed a memorandum of agreement yesterday for a multi-million housing project in Brgy. E Lopez, Silay City.

The MOA signed by Mayor Mark Andrew Arthur Golez of Silay, and Michael Meaney, Managing Director of HHPF, covers the construction of an initial 100 units of cement-bamboo frame housing units in 10 months, with an estimated cost of about P45 million.

Third District Representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, who is the chair of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, and Lili Fuentes, project director of Habitat, signed as witnesses.

UNegA meetings in October, Benitez not ruling out guv bid

The United Negros Alliance is set to hold meetings this month, that will include the swearing in of new members, its secretary general, Acting Governor Salvador Escalante, said yesterday.

He said Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., UNegA chairman, is still determined to support Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg.Occ., 3 rd District) if he runs for senator or governor of Negros Occidental.

Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said yesterday Rep. Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District) is among his personal choices to be included in the 2019 senatorial slate of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan.

The statement of Pimentel, PDP Laban president, came on the heels of the announcement of party secretary general, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, in Negros Occidental Thursday, that Benitez was among the PDP-Laban senate bets for 2019.
