The 45-strong Visayan bloc will vote as one for the new speaker of the House in the 18th Congress, outgoing Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said yesterday.
The representatives of Negros Island form part of the bloc. Senator Loren Legarda, recently elected congresswoman of Antique, was the 45th member to join the bloc, Benitez said.
Benitez however, would not say whom the Visayan bloc would support for House speaker, saying they have yet to reconvene in July.
Among the contenders for the post are representatives Pantaleon Alvarez of Davao del Norte, Aurelio Gonzales of Pampanga and Lord Allan Velasco of Marinduque, who belong to the PDP Laban Party, Martin Romualdez of Leyte, and Alan Peter Cayetano of Taguig.
“It’s still anybody’s ballgame,” Benitez said.*
