Love Negros aims to hold a convention before the year ends to discuss the plans of its members for the 2019 polls, Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said yesterday.
“It is about time to start discussing among ourselves our political plans,” Benitez said, pointing out that the filing of Certificates of Candidacy for the 2019 polls will be in October next year.
Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., who heads the United Negros Alliance, also said earlier that UNegA is planning a gathering of all its members this year.
Benitez, a Love Negros member, said he has yet to decide whether to run for governor of Negros Occidental or for senator.
He said if he opts to run for governor, the choice of vice governor will not be his own preference, but based on a win-win consensus of all political parties under an expected coalition.
There have been speculation of a possible UNegA, Love Negros merger for the 2019 polls.
Marañon has said he will support Benitez if he runs for senator or governor. He also said that if Benitez runs for governor, he will leave it to him to decide who his running mate will be.
However, Benitez has not given up on a possible run for the Senate if there is “an opportunity that will give better leverage for Negros”.
If it will help Negros, it will be a worthwhile undertaking, he said.
But running for the senate would be a big challenge, it would be easier if everyone was in agreement for him to opt to run for governor, Benitez added.*CPG
