President Rodrigo Duterte Thursday night assured Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) of a slot in the 2022 senatorial race, Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said yesterday.
The president “advised Cong Albee to strengthen his leadership in the island,” added Lacson, who is running for governor of Negros Occidental in the May 13 polls.
Duterte also endorsed Lacson’s bid for governor and raised his hand.
It seems Benitez is back in the good graces of the president, whocalled him his good friend in his speech at the PDP Laban-Grupo Progreso rally in Bacolod City Thursday night.
At the start of his speech, the president said “Of course my good friend who made possible the equation now. Kag sino magtakbo diri anong posisyon gatabang siya (and whoever runs for any position here he helps) and he was one of the major players in the decision-making. I know he’s an Ilonggo and he has a bloodline, kaya interesado siya kong ano manyari sa inyo dito si Albee Benitez (that is why he is interested in what happens to you here its Albee Benitez).”
Benitez, who is on his last term as congressman and is not up for reelection, and Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. had arranged a merger between Love Negros and United Negros Alliance that has left many provincial officials running unopposed.
The congressman has also been supporting the senatorial bets of the president for the May polls.*
