Two senatorial aspirants with roots in Negros Occidental made it to the top 12 in the latest Pulse Asia survey for the May 2019 senatorial elections, but three congressmen from the province did not make it.
The two whose mothers are from Negros Occidental who made it to the top 12 were Senator Grace Poe who was ranked No. 1, and former Senator Sergio “Serge” Osmeña ranked 6-13.
Former presidential aspirant Mar Roxas, whose mother is also from Negros, did not make it to the top 12. His awareness rating was 97 percent but he was ranked 14 to 21.
The others from Negros Occidental who did not make it to the top 12 are former Bayan Rep. Neri Colmenares of Bacolod who was ranked 27-34, Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) – 34-46, and Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano of Sipalay City – 43-56.
Benitez said that is because the survey showed that public awareness of him was (28 percent) one of the lowest in the list.
“I don’t look at awareness too much. It’s more of conversion. Things are very fluid yet at this stage,” he said.
Benitez has yet to decide whether he will run for senator or governor in 2019 or return to the private sector.
Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Special Assistant to the President Bong Go on Sunday endorsed Benitez for senator at an anti-drug summit in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.
Go was ranked 23-31 in the senate survey.
Osmeña, when ask if he was planning to run for senator in 2019, said “I don’t know. The Comelec is the problem. They don’t know how to count”.
Among those in the top 12 which Poe topped were former senator Pia Cayetano at No. 2, Senator Cynthia Villar – 3-4, Davao Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio – 3-5, Senator Edgardo Angara Jr. – 4-8, Senator Jinggoy Estrada – 5-12, former Philippine National Police chief Ronald dela Rosa – 5-12, Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III – 5-12, Senator Nancy Binay – 6-12, former senator Sergio “Serge” Osmeña – 6-13, former senator Lito Lapid – 6-13, and Senator JV Ejercito – 6-13.
Based on a multistage probability sample of 1,800 registered voters 18 years old and above, Pulse Asia’s nationwide survey has a + 2 percent error margin at the 95 percent confidence level, the firm said.*CPG
