SILAY CITY – Negros Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez said Thursday the looming dissolution of Negros Island Region (NIR) has nothing to do with politics.
“I don’t think it’s political, it’s more on the (proposed) federalism,” the lawmaker said, adding that he doesn’t think the administration is testing the loyalty of the elected officials here.

NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez said that he is looking to establish a drug rehabilitation center in Silay City to address the massive number of drug surrenderers in his district.
He said that he was shown a picture of an area in Silay City that could be converted into a rehabilitation center.

NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez said Thursday the reduced P2-billion sugarcane industry fund for next year was already addressed.
“We’re given P1.4 billion, which is short of P600 million from the P2 billion mandated appropriation. We had a gentleman’s agreement with the Department of Budget and Management and the House committee on appropriations that the P600 million balance will be added to 2018,” he said.

NEGROS Occidental third district Representative Alfredo Benitez said he is seeking answers on the reduction in the P2-billion sugarcane industry fund for next year.
Instead of the P2-billion budget, only P1.562 billion was appropriated for 2017, Benitez said.
“By law, P2 billion is a mandatory appropriation that must be allocated for the sugarcane industry,” he pointed out.

HOUSE Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said Thursday, September 15, that he will look into the possibility of including Negros Island Region in the 2017 appropriation of the National Government.
“I think the DBM (Department of Budget and Management) has expressed their reservation for the full implementation (of the executive order creating NIR), but it doesn’t mean we’re not going to totally implement (the EO),” he added.

THE ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas Ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) is working out the unity of two major political groups in Negros Occidental -- the United Negros Alliance (Unega) and Love Negros.
Unega is chaired by Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., while Love Negros is led by third district Representative Alfredo Benitez and Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.

Three mayors in the Third District of Negros Occidental who took their oaths of office in separate ceremonies on Thursday pledged to provide better services to their constituents.
In Silay City, first term Mayor Mark Andrew Arthur Golez vowed to work for the realization of their team’s campaign platform.
These include restoring peace and order by declaring an all-out war against drugs, achieve food sufficiency, and help food processors, landless workers, and informal settlers.
Golez, who took his oath before Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez, said that his administration also intends to establish a city college and improve existing schools as well as set up more government facilities like a public market.
