There are more than 50,000 informal settler families in the third district of Negros Occidental, Marie June Pavillar-Castro, district coordinator on housing concerns, yesterday said.
Castro said there is an ongoing Habitat housing project in Brgy. E Lopez, Silay City, while Rep. Alfredo Benitez has set aside P4.5 million for land acquisition by local government units in the district.
The creation of the Department of Human Settlement, which is expected to address the housing concerns, sponsored by Benitez in the House of Representative, and re-electionist Senator JVB Ejercito in the Senate, is now up for signing by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Castro said that she has been urging local government units to avail of the Local Resettlement Assistance Program of the National Housing Authority, which is a P25 million grant, plus an additional P25 million interest free loan.
Only the Silay City government has availed of the Local Resettlement Assistance Program, so far, she added.
Murcia municipal government has also expressed its intention to avail of the project, Castro said.
She added that Habitat is also building 10,000 disaster resilient houses in Negros Occidental.*
