Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District) said he expects sugar industry stakeholders and Coca-Cola to come up with a win-win solution soon.
Sugar industry stakeholders have declared a boycott on Coca-Cola products in protest against its use of High Fructose Corn Sugar as a substitute for domestically produces cane sugar.
Coca-Cola said it expanding the capacity of its Bacolod plant, that will double the amount of locally produced sugar that its buys. It, however, has not said when it will retool its other plants to be able to use cane sugar for the production of its beverages.
Benitez said what is important is that Coke has agreed to the validity of Sugar Order No. 3 that empowers the Sugar Regulatory Administration to regulate HFCS.
Now what is needed is for Coke to withdraw its case against the SRA for issuing Sugar Order No. 3.
Benitez also said he is hopeful that the stakeholders and Coke will come up with an agreement in a meeting soon.*CPG
