VICTORIAS CITY - Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd district) yesterday expressed support for the proposed restoration of the death penalty, but only for heinous crimes.
Benitez said the 21 crimes being proposed to warrant death penalty are too many.
“Let's just make sure that only heinous crimes, that are not done by a normal person, are punished by the death penalty, he said.
The proposed measure seeking to reimpose the death penalty in the country was approved at the House committee level on December 7, by a vote of 12-6-1, in favor of the restoration of capital punishment.
House Bill Number 1 provides three methods to carry out the death penalty, which are by firing squad, hanging, or lethal injection.
The three dioceses of Bacolod, Kabankalan and San Carlos earlier expressed their vehement opposition to the restoration of the death penalty.
Benitez said “The death penalty itself does not kill”. It is up to the person if he wants to enter into the death chamber, he said.
While it is inconclusive that the reimposition of death penalty will reduce
crimes, he said the would-be crime offenders would think many times before
committing such crimes, he said.*GPB
