NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez was given a slot by the party of President Rodrigo Duterte should he decide to run for senator in the 2019 elections.
This was revealed Tuesday, May 9 by Acting Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, who said it was House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, secretary-general of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan, who offered the senate slot to Benitez.
With this development, Lacson said that Benitez will have many options on what to do in 2019.
He said it’s up to the lawmaker to decide what he wants to do in the next elections, but added that “we have not really sat down and discuss 2019.”
Benitez, who is on his third and final term, has been urged by Negrenses especially Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. to seek a senatorial seat.
Benitez had earlier said that he has yet to finalize his political plans, though he admitted he is also being urged to run for governor.
Marañon heads the United Negros Alliance while rival party Love Negros is headed by Benitez and Lacson.
Lacson, asked if he will run for governor in the next election, said that he has not made a decision yet.
“That decision will come next year,” he added.
Meanwhile, Lacson is acting governor of the province from May 8 to 12 as Marañon is out of the country for a business trip.
