Negros Occidental third district Rep. Alfredo Benitez recently revealed President Rodrigo Duterte assured him he would not oppose the creation of the Negros Federal Region (NFR), the proposed federal state comprised of both Negros provinces and Siquijor.
Members of the Consultative Committee to Review the 1987 Constitution, alongside Negros Oriental officials, took part in a regional consultation on federalism, organized by the DILG, earlier this week in Dumaguete City. (PIO photo)
Benitez spoke during a rally at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex in Dumaguete City, which kicked off the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) federalism roadshow last Monday.
The congressman also reiterated an earlier statement by DILG Assistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya, who serves as spokesperson for the Consultative Committee, affirming NFR is included among the list of regional states in the proposal for a shift towards a federal form of government.
He also appealed for the public to support as move towards federalism, claiming, if it is not accomplished during the Duterte administration, it will never have another chance.
Benitez, together with Malaya, Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Remollo, and Isabela Mayor Joselito Malabor led the signing of a manifesto in support of federalism.
During the program the federalism seal was also unveiled, along with a federalism jingle./DGB, WDJ
