The search for heroes continues, 118 years after the bloodless Cinco de Noviembre revolution that freed Silaynons from more than 300 years of Spanish domination.
Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd district) in his message that was read by Mayor Mark Golez during the Cinco De Noviembre celebration Saturday in Silay City, said that in the modern age of technology and information, “We look up to modern heroes as the ones who have a strong sense of charity, justice, humility and morality”.

“Even if ridiculed, he sacrifices personal comfort and gain for others, and does not expect recognition, nor never makes it to the news,” Benitez said.
Golez led the Cinco de Noviembre celebrations at the marker in SilayCity, that was also highlighted by the signing of the Silay Tourism Code, by its officials, including ViceMayor Joedith Gallego, and witnessed by members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
TheSilay city government also recognized the effort of the Akol family, represented by Yves Akol, secretary general of the PDP-Laban, who donated a vintage cannon at the Cinco de Noviembre marker.
In his speech, Benitez also said that “Everybody could be a hero” who can transform compassion into a heroic act by putting their best selves forward, in service to humanity.
“We can be that charitable hero who loves to give, even if there is no more to give”, he said.
He also reminded government officials to give their utmost best to serve their constituents.
The Cinco de Noviembre rites were followed by the Marcha Independencia and a flag-raising ceremony at the Silay City public plaza.*
