The chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development wants the National Housing Authority (NHA) to suspend contractors charged with fraudulently constructing substandard housing units and facilities for victims of natural and man-made disasters.
Negros Occidental Representative Albee Benitez made the call while heading a congressional inquiry that is looking into irregularities that attended the development of housing communities for victims of the 2013 Zamboanga City siege.
Benitez said the NHA should be ready to suspend erring contractors should criminal charges be recommended against them for hoodwinking government by constructing substandard houses and community facilities for victims rendered homeless by calamities.
Benitez, together with Zamboanga City Rep. Beng Climaco and Rep. Celso Lobregat, fell into a murky creek in Barangay Rio Hondo, Zamboanga City, when a wooden bridge they were crossing collapsed.
A congressional inquiry was initiated by the Negros Occidental solon who noted that similar concerns on substandard housing projects have been observed in housing communities for victims of supertyphoon “Yolanda.”
