President Rodrigo Duterte is being called on to declare a national period of mourning starting next week to honor healthcare workers who died after contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.
“This is the least that we can do to honor our healthcare workers who risked their safety to serve our nation in its darkest hour. They are modern-day heroes deserving our nation’s highest respect,” former Rep. Alfredo Benitez said yesterday.

Former Rep. Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez yesterday stressed the urgent need for a Negros Occidental recovery plan with COVID-19 having caused about P9.57 billion in economic loss to the province.
What is alarming is about 976,000 jobs may be lost in Negros Occidental and 83,000 overseas Filipino workers have returned translating to a potential loss of P7 billion in remittances, Benitez, provincial consultant on economic affairs, said.
Benitez presented his road to recovery plan framework at a meeting with Negros Occidental officials, department and office heads, and hospital chiefs, led by Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, and attended by Rep. Francisco Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District), at the Capitol Social Hall in Bacolod City.

As we welcome home stranded residents and overseas workers, it is inevitable that some of them may bring home the coronavirus especially if they come in from Metro Manila and Cebu where there are increasing cases of COVID-19.
Negros Occidental residents are lucky enough that the laboratory at the Silay provincial hospital is now open, thus, it is easier to immediately isolate those who test positive from the general community.
Thankfully, Rep. Albee Benitez, now the provincial consultant for Economic Development, announced last Friday that the Silay lab will accept swabs from Bacolod repatriates as well, instead of sending these to Iloilo which takes days, even weeks, before results are known.

The leaders of Western Visayas agreed on a “Partnership for Region 6 Recovery and Development” at a meeting held in Iloilo City yesterday, former Rep. Alfredo Benitez, Negros Occidental economic consultant, said.
The details of the partnership will be threshed out by a technical working group, Benitez said.

The COVID-19 testing laboratory at the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City that is now operational will shorten the quarantine period for returning overseas Filipino workers (OWFs), who are found negative for the virus, Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said yesterday.
The laboratory can have test results out in two to four hours, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said.

Former Rep. Alfredo Benitez, provincial government economic adviser, yesterday said he expects negative gross domestic product (GDP) growth for Negros Occidental in the second quarter of this year.
The quarantines imposed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are taking their toll, he said.
During the Enhanced Community Quarantine about 900,000 jobs halted out of the 1.4 million labor force in the province, Benitez said.
