Talisay City and Murcia were victorious in the Albee Cup Volleyball Tournament, winning the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, with both sides defeating teams representing EB Magalona.

Following the conclusion of the fourth week of the ongoing Albee Cup, most recently hosted by the municipality of EB Magalona, the host city finds themselves ahead of the pack in ladies’ volleyball, while Talisay City leads in men’s basketball.
EB Magalona beat Victorias City in ladies’ volleyball. The latter followed up the loss with a win over Silay City. On the men’s side, Silay City lost to both EB Magalona and Talisay City.

A consortium of local government units (LGUs) in the third legislative district of Negros Occidental is considering the installation of a waste-to-energy plant.
According to Victorias City Mayor Francis Frederick Palanca, the five LGUs, together with local congressman, Rep. Alfredo Benitez, are “negotiating with an American firm for the project that will convert plastic waste into diesel.”

The House of Representatives passed yesterday the tax reform package introduced by Malacañang, which includes a P10 per liter excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, despite a critical amendment proposed by the Visayan Bloc to reduce the charge by half to P5 per liter.
The bloc, led by Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo ‘Albee’ Benitez (3rd District, PDP-Laban), supported the proposed reduction but ultimately failed as the House plenary voted overwhelmingly in support of the bill certified as urgent by President Rodrigo R. Duterte recently.

A total 150 Estado Elementary School-Hacienda Mimi Extension students received free immunization for influenza, of the flu, a project of Victoria Bantug Hoffart, together with the Victorias Kaayong Lawas Foundation and the Immaculate Conception Health Center.
School head Cynthia Lazo welcomed and thanked the project benefactors. The group also distributed notebooks as a contribution towards the Brigada Eskwela program of the school./WDJ

Victorias City currently leads the ongoing 3rd Albee Cup Inter-LGU Sportsfest, following basketball and volleyball events, which took place over the weekend at the Natalio G. Velez Sports and Cultural Center in Silay City.
Dr. Francisco B. Benitez, Philippine Women’s University president and younger brother of Negros Occidental 3rd District Rep. Alfredo Benitez, took part in the ceremonial toos to kick off the 3rd Albee Cup. He is joined by Victorias City Mayor Frederick Palanca, Silay City Mayor Mark Golez, EB Magalona Mayor Marvin Malacon, and Talisay City Councilor Gab Villacin.

The administration Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) has reserved a slot in its 2019 senatorial lineup for 3rd District Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez, Vice Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson yesterday said.
Lacson, a stalwart of the Nationalist People’s Coalition and one of the leaders of local political bloc Love Negros, made the revelation when Capitol pressed him for a reaction to a possible gubernatorial matchup against Benitez in 2019.

Rumors of political parties scouring the province for candidates to succeed Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr., whose third and final term ends in 2019, were recently confirmed by Rep. Alfredo Benitez, who said he has been approached to run.
“The election is still too far,” he remarked. “We have a lot of things do, I’d rather focus on that.”

During the birthday celebration of Rep. Alfredo Benitez at the Victorias City Coliseum yesterday, Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. said his birthday wish for the congressman was to run for Senate.
According to the governor, with Benitez into his third and final term, he thinks he has a shot at national office.

In his State of the District Address yesterday at the Silay City Civic Center, Rep. Alfredo Benitez (3rd District) expressed his belief that President Rodrigo Duterte is planning to suspend NIR until the country shifts to a federal system, where the government can push through with “full implementation.”
It was recently revealed by Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Benjamin Diokno that an executive order to dissolve NIR is currently awaiting the president’s signature.
