Unega, Love Negros merger still likely

A merger between the United Negros Alliance and Love Negros is still possible with Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. having said that he will support the senatorial or gubernatorial bid of Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) in the 2019 polls, Board Member Salvador Escalante, Unega secretary general, said yesterday.
He said Marañon has not made any commitment should Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson of Love Negros decide to run for governor of Negros Occidental, but the vice governor has been supportive of the programs of the governor, so anything is possible.
But it is too early to talk about politics yet, anything can happen, Escalante added.
Asked if he would run for vice governor in 2019, Escalante said that, aside from him, Unega has a lot of material from city mayors to board members who are all qualified.
On the return of Eduardo Cojuangco as chairman of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, Escalante said Unega remains to a provincial party.
Cojuangco has never left politics in Negros Occidental, evennon- elected officials go to him for his blessings and wisdom, Escalante said.
He continues to be a force to reckon with in Negros, Escalante added.*CPG
