We’re proud of you, officials tell Rushton

We are proud of Negrense beauty titlist Vickie Rushton, Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) and Talisay Mayor Neil Lizares said yesterday.

Rushton, 26, who is from Talisay City in the third district of Negros Occidental, won six special awards, but failed to secure any of the five crowns in the 2019 Binibining Pilipinas competition at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.

“I have words of encouragement and support for her. Circumstances or consequences do not define one's character but provide opportunities for more challenges,” Benitez said.

“We are proud of her, a tumandok of Talisay City, and recognize her potential for greater things,” he added.

Lizares, on his Facebook page, said that, united with all Talisaynons, he congratulates Rushton for fighting a good fight.

“Win or lose, deep in our hearts, you are our unanimous winner,” he said.

Rushton, an early favorite in the Bb. Pilipinas, is said to have lost the chance of winning because of her reply in the question and answer segment of the show.

Actor Daniel Padilla, one of the judges, asked her: "Why is mental health as important as physical health?"

To which she replied: "Mental health is as important as physical health, because of our inner being. Having self-love is important. As a woman, I can inspire and empower the people to take care of themselves, to take care of their mind as well as their health. They will be as effective."

Rushton in an interview in Manila later said she knew the answer but was distracted by someone in the audience and lost it.

Someone in the audience stood up and made a face, she said, which distracted her.

The Miss Universe Philippines title that was eventually won by Gazini Ganados, 23, of Talisay City, Cebu, who was also named Face of Binibini and Best in Long Gown.

Samantha Lo of Cebu City was Bb Pilipinas Grand International, Resham Saeed of Maguindanao - Bb Pilipinas Supranational, Bea Patricia Magtanong of Bataan – Bb Pilipinas International, Leren Mae Bautista of Laguna - Bb Pilipinas Globe, and Emma Tiglao of Pampanga - Bb Pilipinas Intercontinental.*
