Albee denies announcing 2019 gubernatorial bid
Thursday, July 19, 2018
Amid the social media drum beating of his supporters believing that he has already declared his intention to run for governor of Negros Occidental during the mid-term elections in 2019, Rep. Alfredo Benitez (3rd district) yesterday denied that he “officially” announced his gubernatorial bid.
In a text message to local media, Benitez said he “did not make any announcement.”
“I actually announced that I will rest,” the congressman said.
The report of the “announcement” spread like wildfire on social media yesterday among Benitez’ supporters.
A picture posted on Facebook by Silay City Vice Mayor Joedith Gallego shows Benitez raising the hands of some leaders.
Sources confirmed to Negros Daily Bulletin that the congressman had called for a get-together of his leaders and supporters at his fishpond in Victorias City late Wednesday night.
The “announcement” was confirmed by former Board Member Patrick Lacson citing Silay City Councilor Aileen Ascalon Javier.
However, yesterday the picture of the get-together and thread of comments in the posts of Lacson was taken down or deleted.
A source very close to Benitez who refused to be named for lack of authority, said “unless it is the congressman himself who will say it, that is still a speculation.”
Reached for comment, Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said “to wait” for Benitez’ “announcement.”
The congressman who is on his last term is considered as a frontrunner for the Capitol’s top seat when it will be vacated by incumbent Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. who is also on his last term.
Marañon had earlier expressed support for Benitez despite belonging to rival political groups.
However, the outgoing solon has remained mum on his political plans on whether to seek a senatorial seat under the administration party, run for governor, or retire from politics.* (NDB)
