Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez slows down Charter change train

MANILA, Philippines — In a change of tack, Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez yesterday stepped back from the House of Representatives’ original plan to hold a plebiscite simultaneous with the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on May 14.
Alvarez also said he was just joking when he warned congressmen and local executives that the House would cut off funding for those who refused to support the shift to federalism.

Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on Monday confirmed the candidacy of presidential spokesperson Harry Roque and two other incumbent congressmen as senators under the banner of the ruling party PDP-Laban in the 2019 midterm elections.
In a television interview, Alvarez said Roque, a former Kabayan party-list representative, is already part of PDP-Laban's senatorial slate for 2019.

LEYTE, Philippines – The town rescue group of San Miguel is getting more ready to help in times of calamity.

House presents ‘best version’ of bill creating housing department

After nearly three decades of futile bid to enact a bill establishing a Department of Housing and Urban Development, the House of Representatives has finally come up with what is considered the finest version of the many bills filed since 1989 for the creation of a government department that would address the worsening housing problem in the country.
Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez, chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, made this assurance as the Lower House launched Tuesday night the plenary debates for House Bill 6775 that consolidated five legislative proposals for the creation of the DHUD.

A Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (Ledac) priority measure for the creation of the proposed Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHUD) is now inching its way to become a law with the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development’s endorsement for plenary approval.
Committee Chairman and Rep. Alfredo Benitez of the Third District of Negros Occidental said House Bill (HB) 6775, would address the worsening housing problem in the country.

Rep. Albee Benitez, chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, delivered his sponsorship remarks of House Bill 6775 creating the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.
"We cannot achieve our dream of inclusive development if we cannot address problems as basic as housing. The creation of this Department of Human Settlements is a critical step towards helping our citizens realize their dream of having their own house. This department will serve as a robust backbone structure towards building a stronger nation," Rep. Benitez said.
