Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said yesterday that he is 90 percent sure the barangay elections in October will be postponed.
But the issue on appointing new barangay officials will take a little more discussion, he said.
“There are several groups who don't feel easy with the appointing of public officials,” he said.
The first question is, who will appoint them? Benitez said.
“If we give the appointing powers to the president, he does not know all the barangay captains and kagawads. Somebody will have to make recommendations so who will do that?” Benitez asked.
That is the problem if we start tinkering with elected government official's posts, he said.
Benitez said that, for him “We might as well just do the traditional way of (having) holdover (barangay officials)”.
Elections would be easier, but the drawback is that will be the time when we will be pushing for federalism, and we will need all the help we can get for information dissemination at the barangay level, he said.*CPG
