The Negros solons were at the Bacolod Government Center yesterday for a House Committee on Constitutional Amendments consultative meeting.
Rep. Roger Mercado (Southern Leyte), chairman of the House Committee on Constitutional Amendments, said the Lower House hopes to amend the Constitution through a Constituent Assembly next year.
He said a federal form of government would bring development and growth out of imperial Manila, to regions around the country.
There are two views, to retain the present regional structures, or to merge some of the smaller ones with less income with the bigger ones, Mercado said.
The Philippines currently has 18 regions.
Rep. Mercedes Alvarez (Neg. Occ., 6th District) said that, aside from a resolution filed by the Visayan bloc in support of the NIR, the Negros solons will also push for keeping the two Negros provinces as one under a federal state.
Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) also supports the move.*CPG
