Lawmakers aghast at ‘Yolanda’ shelters

“Worse than a piggery” was how one member of the House of Representatives on Wednesday described government bunkhouses for survivors of Supertyphoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) in 2013.

Many housing units in resettlement areas had unsafe foundations with walls so thin that residents were told not to hammer nails into them, another congressman said. The beam in at least one house toppled over, he added.

Members of the House housing and urban development panel were left aghast at the dilapidated shelters for the Yolanda victims which they saw during a visit last week to inspect the “snail-paced” government housing projects in Eastern Visayas.

House lawmakers digging deeper into substandard Yolanda housing units

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives are digging deeper into the reportedly substandard construction of the housing units for survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda (internationally known as Haiyan).

In a press briefing on Wednesday, Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, said only 23,414 of the projected 205,128 housing units – or 11.4 percent – have so far been occupied.

Housing budget: Agencies lose big, gain big

Amid the Duterte government’s push to “build, build, build” infrastructure, a House of Representatives leader is questioning the proposal to cut the budget for the housing sector by 69 percent.

The proposed budget actually cut billions from agencies catering to housing development and resettlement while allocating hundreds of millions for agencies assisting  low-income earners and families.

In a statement, Negros Occidental 3rd Dist. Rep. Alfredo Benitez, the chair of the committee on housing and urban development, said the government should also address the problem of homelessness.

A port magnate and sportsman representing a partylist for the marginalized and displaced sector is the richest member of the House of Representatives, according to the latest Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) submitted by 294 legislators.

1-Pacman Partylist Representative Michael Odylon “Mikee” Romero topped the 294-member chamber in terms of wealth, with a declared net worth of P7,009,588,018 as of December 31, 2016.

Village officials may have to stay in their seats a little longer.

The members of the House of Representatives agreed to postpone the barangay elections for another seven months to May 2018.

Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas said lawmakers reached a consensus during a Monday afternoon caucus to synchronize the barangay elections with the plebiscite for Charter change and the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law.
