Solon wants NHA to mete out sanctions on cheating contractors

The chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development wants the National Housing Authority (NHA) to suspend contractors charged with fraudulently constructing substandard housing units and facilities for victims of natural and man-made disasters.

Negros Occidental Representative Albee Benitez made the call while heading a congressional inquiry that is looking into irregularities that attended the development of housing communities for victims of the 2013 Zamboanga City siege.

‘Let informal settlers take 55,000 gov’t housing units’

A senior administration lawmaker on Friday demanded the immediate implementation of a congressional initiative allowing informal settlers to be beneficiaries of 55,000 unoccupied housing units intended for men and women in uniform, saying that this will save the houses from deterioration.

Collapsed Zambo bridge contractor offers weak excuse

The construction company that built the collapsed wooden bridge in Barangay Rio Hondo, Zamboanga City has owned up to its mistake but gave investigating congressmen a rather flimsy excuse for it Wednesday.

The House committee on housing and urban development opens on Tuesday its inquiry into the irregularities that tainted the housing projects for victims of the 2013 Zamboanga City siege.

Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez, committee chairman, said the House panel has invited officials of the National Housing Authority and contractors of the Zamboanga City housing projects.

Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III on Thursday bared the names of those being considered for the Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan’s (PDP-Laban) senatorial slate in the 2019 midterm elections.

Pimentel, PDP-Laban president, in a phone interview, said he has compiled some 20 names, including a media practitioner, who could be in the ruling political party’s ticket for the May 2019 polls.

Heeding President Duterte’s call to prioritize the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law, congressmen cut short their summer vacation, went back to work and held an executive session to fine-tune a consolidated BBL bill.

This developed as the Anak Mindanao Partylist represented by Rep. Amihilda Sangcopan warned that it will reject a “diluted and watered down BBL.”

Visayan Bloc backs BBL approval

The Visayan Bloc, an organization of 42 congressmen representing congressional districts and party-list groups in the Visayas, on Friday declared its support for the swift passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) “that is consistent with the provisions of the Constitution.”

Headed by lead convenor and Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Benitez, the Visayan Bloc issued its manifesto of support a day after President Duterte met with congressional leaders and officials of various Muslim organizations to discuss the legislative proposal that is widely seen as the formula that will put an end to the secessionist war in the south.

In what could be considered as a rare occasion, Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez today humbly admitted he erred on the list of senatoriables comprising the dominant Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino slate for 2019 he provided the media.

Alvarez said he unintentionally omitted the names of party stalwart, Negros Occidental Rep. Alfred “Albee” Benitez and Malacañang Asst. Secretary Mocha Uson.

Transforming thousands of hectares of idle government land into socialized housing projects for the homeless will be one of the priority tasks of the proposed Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).

Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez revealed that the DHSUD is also expected to adopt the on-side, in-city and near-city resettlement program for informal settler families which was endorsed by Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo (Albee) Benitez, chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development.

House presents ‘best version’ of bill creating housing department

After nearly three decades of futile bid to enact a bill establishing a Department of Housing and Urban Development, the House of Representatives has finally come up with what is considered the finest version of the many bills filed since 1989 for the creation of a government department that would address the worsening housing problem in the country.

Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez, chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, made this assurance as the Lower House launched Tuesday night the plenary debates for House Bill 6775 that consolidated five legislative proposals for the creation of the DHUD.
