Teach for the Philippines (TFP), a non-government organization, is now complimenting the promotion of quality education in two public schools in the cities of Victorias and Talisay, Negros Occidental, after signing a memorandum of agreement with two local government units and Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd district)
Rep. Alfredo Benitez, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Virginia, United States, served as a guest teacher of Mathematics to Grade 8 students at a public high school in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.*
There are six teacher fellows assigned at the Victorias City National High School and a public elementary school in Talisay City, who are complimenting the educational instructions of teachers by also becoming classroom teachers.
Benitez, who claimed he was impressed by the objectives of TFP, yesterday served as a guest teacher of a mathematics subject at the Victorias City National High School in Victorias City.
“This is something that we hope to continue as local government units understand the importance for having a quality education,” Benitez, who spent almost one hour teaching high school students, said.
Benitez facilitated the entry of TFP to Negros Occidental public schools.
Patricia Feria Lim, TFP chief Strategic Resources Officer, yesterday said they have started deployment of young graduates and professionals, not necessarily as licensed teachers or education majors, since 2013 in various areas of the country but, to help teachers in public schools.
The idea Lim said is “ we would like to diversify the people, engineers, psychologists, math majors and historians, attracted into the teaching profession”.
Aside from inviting young professionals to spend at least two years to compliment instruction in the public schools by becoming classroom teachers, Lim said they are piloting a program in Manila of initiating training programs for public school teachers.
Benitez, who said he is pushing for a much bigger scale in the operations of TFP nationwide, also said 99 percent of educational system is dependent on teachers.
“If you have a good teacher, definitely you will have good students. So, we would like to upgrade that, and hopefully address the quality of teachers by enhancing the best practices from other countries, and teachers, so that we can impart this to quality oriented educational system”, he added.
In the pursuit of better quality education, we are trying modern techniques and technology to help achieve that, Benitez said.
TFP is part of the Teach For All global network of 46 independent, locally led and governed partner organizations that work to accelerate development in disadvantaged communities.*
