Negros Occidental third district Rep. Alfredo Benitez is expected to announce the endorsement of his brother, Jose Francisco, as his preferred successor when the congressman’s term expires in 2019, during a meeting in Talisay City today before 25,000 local politicians.
Last month, Benitez deployed his elder brother throughout the district to get a pulse of the electorate; to see if they would like the seat to remain within their family.
The congressman is also expected to reveal his ‘Asenso’ slate for the 2019 polls.
While Benitez has been tapped as a possible senatorial candidate after his term ends, he has yet to officially reveal his future plans; however, Benitez has been spotted in different parts of the country, suggesting he may be preparing for a national run.
Earlier, with the congressman deciding between running for Senate or seeking to replace outgoing Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr., he said, “At the proper time, we would make that decision.”
Meanwhile, among third district mayors, most will be seeking re-election in 2019, namely, Silay City Mayor Mark Andrew Golez, Talisay City Mayor Neil Lizares III, and EB Magalona Mayor Marvin Malacon./DGB, WDJ
