NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez Sunday, April 2, said the postponement of the barangay elections set in October is 90 percent likely.
The issue on who will appoint the new set of barangay officials will take a little bit of discussion, he said.
“There are several groups that don’t feel easy about appointing public officials. The first question is who will appoint? If the president will appoint, he doesn't know all the barangay officials so he will need recommendations and who will do that,” Benitez said.
He added he is backing the idea that the incumbent barangay officials will again be on holdover status.
It would be advantageous to the incumbents because their terms have already been extended for one year, he said.
“The mayors can appoint but it will bring us back to the political environment. There are pros and cons, but for me might as well do the traditional holdover,” Benitez said.
He said the drawback in the schedule of the barangay election is the push for federalism where a barangay-based information campaign is needed.
The issue on the proposed postponement of the barangay election anew is expected to be resolved by Congress after the Holy Week break. (TDE)
