Piñol cites underspending for cut in P2B SIDA fund

MANILA- The cut in the P2 billion mandatory annual appropriation for the sugar industry, as stipulated in the Sugar Industry Development Act, which aims to make the industry competitive, was blamed yesterday by Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñolon “underspending” by the Sugar Regulatory Administration.

Senator Cynthia Villar, who presided over the joint hearing of the Senate committees on Agriculture and Food and that of the Trade, Commerce and Entreprenuership chaired by Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, on the impact of the rising importation of high fructose corn syrup, said the P2B SIDA annual budget for 2017 has been slashed to P1.4 billion.

Fast-track Bacolod coastal road: SP

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod is asking the Department of Public Works and Highways and Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya to fast-track and include in their priority list of projects the coastal road project that will traverse Barangays Punta-Taytay,Singcang-Airport, 35, 2, 3, 1, Banago and the Reclamation Area in Bacolod City.

Bacolod Councilor Caesar Distrito said the proposed coastal road project will change the landscape of the city and tremendously help reduce the volume of traffic in major streets.

Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said yesterday that he is 90 percent sure the barangay elections in October will be postponed.

But the issue on appointing new barangay officials will take a little more discussion, he said.

“There are several groups who don't feel easy with the appointing of public officials,” he said.

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, who wasin Negros Occidental last night, said he was on a trip through the western seaboard to see for himself how the nautical highway can be further improved.

Alvarez said he came to Bacolod from Iloilo and was headed for Dumaguete today as part of his western seaboard nautical highway trip, and will return to Manila via the eastern seaboard.

“We are preparing the budget for 2018 and we want to personally see the conditions of the roads, bridges, ro-ro terminals and the boats crossing between islands if they are safe and clean, and charge reasonable fees for users,” he said.

Bacolod Rep. Greg Gasataya said yesterday he is lobbying to have the House Committee on Agriculture hearing on the unabated entry of High Fructose Corn Syrup into the country to be held in Negros Occidental.

Gasataya said he had requested the Committee on Agriculture to hold the hearing in the province so it will be easier for all the stakeholders because they will not have to travel to Manila.

Will it be a Benitez-Lacson tandem in 2019?

Negros Occidental ViceGovernor Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday said that this will be known in October 2018, and recalled that he made his decision to run for re-election as vice-governor in the 2016 elections, also on October 2015.

Lacson, however, said that they are not talking 2019 elections yet.
